Topic: Life Saving Skills: A Lifelong Learning Process (By SCDF)
Speaker: Ms Janice Oh

16 May, Sunday, 4PM @ Suntec City Convention Ctr, Level 3 Room 325
This seminar cum workshop aims to reach out to the general public on a brief introduction of the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), followed by a demonstration on how CPR and AED is applied to people in need.Part 1: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – CPR is a physical intervention that creates an artificial circulation through rhythmic compression on to patient’s chest to manually pump blood through the heart; and ventilating the lungs to pass oxygen into the blood.CPR does not restart the heart but serves to maintain the flow of oxygenated blood to vital organs such as the brain and heart from dying. By delaying tissue death, CPR extends the small window of opportunity for successful resuscitation without causing permanent brain damage to the patient.

In order to restore the heart with a viable rhythm for life support, the use of intravenous drugs and defibrillation in advance life support is needed. However, this can only be used if CPR done can help to induce a shockable rhythm (VF/VT) in an asystolic patient.

CPR is only stopped when there is a return in spontaneous circulation or when declared dead.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) – An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses cardiac arrhythmia – namely Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) or Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and re-establishes an effective rhythm through the application of electrical therapy.

In cardiac arrhythmia, despite remaining active, the heart beats in a life-threatening, dysfunctional pattern that is either too fast (VT) or chaotic (VF) for effective blood pump that eventually cease to beat (asystole); leading to cardiac arrest in patient.

Since AED can only detect VF or pulseless VT, it is therefore important for CPR and a combination of cardiac stimulant drugs to be carried out before an AED can be used.

About The SpeakerLTA Janice Oh joined the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) as a Paramedic Specialist in 1998. In 2004, she crossed over to the Senior Officer Scheme afterwhich she undertook the appointment of “Rota Commander” at “Bishan Fire Station” for 2 years. Following this operational stint at the station, she was posted to the Medical Department, HQ SCDF and appointed as “Assistant Director, Emergency Medical Services”.
